Out of the box

Two squares and two given areas. What’s the total area?

Scroll down for a solution to this problem.

Solution

The total area is 59.

Solution by Matthew Arcus.

Draw containing square & diagonal, giving a square in the bottom corner. Apply symmetries to get 4 triangles area 5, so central square has area 25, side 5 & therefore corner squares have side 2, giving total area, 59.

Poem

In the box
Another box
You can put in it so well
A stone, sand, a shell,
A perfume, a smell,
You can hold them these days
And keep them safe always
Don’t let them out of the box
Just keep them well and care
To let them out of the treasure box you need the key
You just ask me !
