The hex division

A regular hexagon with two diagonals and two perpendiculars. What’s red : yellow?

Scroll down for a solution to this problem.

Solution

Red : yellow is 1 : 2.

Solution by Marshall W. Buck.

The yellow/red triangle pairs are similar (just check some angles). Then the fact that medians in the bottom equilateral triangle are divided 2:1 shows that yellow:red = 2:1.

Checking angles is very easy because of all the right angles between corresponding sides. a 90 degree turn plus a dilation will turn one set of triangles into the other.
