Connect B to L. Similarity dictates that this line will pass through the shared corner. Which means that (a+c)/(b+d) is also equal to a/b and c/d.

x/a = c/ (a+c) …… (1)
y/d = a/(a+c) ………(2)

These two equations gives x/y = c/d
